Capirossi takes second pole of season

Loris Capirossi added another pole position to his growing collection of accolades with the Ducati Desmosedici at Assen this afternoon, as the Italian trio which have dominated MotoGP in recent years became the first three men to dip under the two minute mark at the historic Gauloises Dutch TT circuit. Honda riders Max Biaggi and Valentino Rossi joined their compatriot on the front row of the grid for Saturday´s race in second and third place respectively, despite intense pressure from the rest of the field, as fifteen riders lapped under Rossi´s pole previous pole record from 2002. Carlos Checa clocked the fastest time ever by a Yamaha M1 at this circuit to complete the front row in fourth place.

Checa´s late effort knocked his factory colleague Olivier Jacque back to the second row in fifth place, just moments after Jacque had done the same to team-mate Alex Barros. The fourth factory Yamaha rider Marco Melandri also appeared briefly on the front row but eventually slipped back to eighth behind Sete Gibernau on the Honda. Colin Edwards was another victim of the late shuffle at the top of the time sheets, dropping all the way back to the third row in ninth after challenging Rossi and Capirossi for top spot throughout the session. However, the Aprilia rider and Yamaha´s Shinya Nakano, who qualified just behind Edwards in tenth, are both within a second of the pole time. Factory Honda riders Tohru Ukawa and Nicky Hayden complete the third row.
