Perugini claims pole position for the 125 British Grand Prix

Stefano Perugini fired a shot for the old guard as he secured his first pole position of the season at a hot and sunny Donington Park this afternoon.

The 28 year old Italian improved his lap time from yesterday by half a second and took the first spot on the front row of the grid for tomorrow's race ahead of a gaggle of teenagers. Perugini's effort meant he was the top Aprilia representative and only rider of the Italian manufacturer in the top five.

World Championship leader Dani Pedrosa grabbed second spot on the grid and was the first of 14 riders in the 1min 38 bracket. Andrea Dovizioso held the provisional top spot until Perugini stole the honour on his final lap of the period. The Italian youngster's team-mate Simone Corsi rounded off a decent day for the Team Scot squad with his first appearance in the top four. Mika Kallio was fifth, Assen ‘podiumee' Hector Barbera sixth and Steve Jenkner seventh.

Both Casey Stoner and Lucio Cecchinello used enough of the 30 minute session in the pits making final changes to their set-up. Stoner suffered slightly more than his team-mate and was only able to rattle off two fast laps in the dying moments. Cecchinello was three hundreds off a second quicker to take 8th ahead of the young Australian.

Only two riders in the top twenty failed to notch a quicker lap today than they managed on Friday. Youichi Ui completed 11 laps but was finally unable to rise above 14th while Alex de Angelis crashed out at Goddards although his time 24 hours earlier was sufficient to leave him tenth.

Perugini goes into the GP tomorrow with a fondness for the dips and curves of the Donington circuit; it was here seven years ago that he took GP victory while the year before he also started from pole.
