Fonsi Nieto finally grabs first race win of the season

Fonsi Nieto won the 250cc British Grand Prix this afternoon at a hot and packed Donington Park after a close dice with Manuel Poggiali, taking the spoils by a mere two tenths of a second.

The Spaniard scored his first victory of the season after seeing rivals Toni Elias and Randy de Puniet both making mistakes that ruled them out of a spot on the podium. Nieto fought for the lead with Poggiali in the second half of the race when Elias dropped back from pair thanks to an error while making a move for the top spot but running wide onto the grass. De Puniet also ventured off the track after experiencing some front brake trouble; the Frenchman would finally cross the finish line down in 8th.

Elias circulated by himself in third for numerous laps until the hard-charging Ant West, who made his way up from a first lap position of 11th, relegated the young Spaniard to fourth inside the last two laps. Roberto Rolfo was very close to sinking Elias back to fifth but lost out by an incredible one thousandth of a second.

Seba Porto claimed eighth as Franco Battaini, Naoki Matsudo and Alex Debon filled out the top ten. Britain's Chaz Davies almost made his goal of the top 12 but was pipped to the flag by Hector Faubel by two tenths of a second. Jay Vincent scored an impressive 11th in his comeback GP appearance as a wild-card.
