Biaggi takes second straight pole

Max Biaggi took his second pole position from as many races in the final qualifying session for the Cinzano Motorrad Grand Prix Deutshcland at the Sachsenring circuit this afternoon. In slightly cloudy but cool conditions the Italian snatched top spot on the starting grid from Jeremy McWilliams by just 0.002 seconds after the British rider had looked set to take an historic pole position on what promises to be the final outing for the nimble Proton KR3 machine at this tight and twisty circuit. Loris Capirossi produced an excellent late lap to gatecrash the front row despite the fact that his Ducati had never completed a single lap here before this weekend. Valentino Rossi, still suffering the effects of a cold, completes the front row in fourth place.

Whilst Capirossi was the surprise package on the front row, his team-mate Troy Bayliss did likewise on the second row, qualifying sixth fastest on his first visit to this difficult track. Sete Gibernau starts from just in front of the Australian in fifth, whilst Carlos Checa and Tohru Ukawa complete the second row. Nobuatsu Aoki was unable to match the heroics of his Proton team-mate McWilliams despite an excellent last lap effort which faded in the final section but still lifted him to the front of the third row in ninth. Yamaha trio Shinya Nakano, Alex Barros and Marco Melandri complete the third row but there is little over a second separating the top fifteen riders on an intensely competitive grid.
