Rolfo sets his designs on the title

With his first ever World Championship victory yesterday in Germany, Robby Rolfo banished the ´nearly´ tag that had been haunting him for most of his career and launched his quest for the title in earnest. The 22 year old from Turin, is starting to reach peak form and is finally gelling with the ´03 Honda, hitting a consistent streak in the first half of the season.

Rolfo is the only rider in the whole 250cc category to have taken points from each of the nine races held so far. However he was still lacking his debut GP victory and he confidently negotiated this hurdle yesterday afternoon. Fittingly, he achieved the milestone at his 80th race appearance and at the circuit where he was so close to success 12 months ago (the ´02 GP was red-flagged due to rain and the fallen Marco Melandri was declared the winner after leading at the start of the previous circulation). It has been a crazy season so far with six different GP victors in the nine GPs to-date, with riders such as Antony West and Randy de Puniet lining their pockets with silverware and precious Championship points

Rolfo has been waiting for his moment since the 2001 season, when he gained his first podium results on a privateer Aprilia and demonstrated to everyone the tenacity and skill that has seen him develop into the rider that is currently attacking the factory Aprilia hoards with venom. He had chances in 2002, steering the works Honda with team Gresini, but struggled to get to grips with the bike that had served Daijiro Kato so well the previous term, he finally had to be content with third place in the standings.

Now he has settled with a second year on the bike and with the Fortuna Honda team, Robby Rolfo now looks at his scorecard with the eyes of a true contender: ` This is my first win of the season but, in reality, I have to say that for the team and myself this is the start of the Championship chase for us.´ Never a truer word was spoken; a mere glimpse at the classification table sees that Rolfo's words do not unfairly represent the close competition. He rests for now in third just 7 points away from leader Poggiali and four from Nieto.
