Another chance to see the first corner mayhem in the 250cc GP

In a GP weekend full of incident, the first corner pile-up in the 250cc Grand Prix provided one of the more spectacular images. Within the first few seconds the race was over for a host of riders including local hope Christian Gemmel, Spaniards Hector Faubel and Joan Olivé, Frenchman Hugo Marchand and Naoki Matsudo. The collision forced the retirement of Faubel, Gemmel and Matsudo while Olivé and Marchand could return to the track.

Faubel commented: `The race was a short one and I hardly made it to the first bend. I had started well, in about six or seventh behind Poggiali, who then braked too soon for the corner. When I tried to avoid him I bumped into Anthony West, we touched and I hit the floor.´

His team-mate Olivé, who remounted and finished 17th remarked: ´Talk about bad luck! I went down in the first curve after someone hit me from behind, I wanted to continue but the front brake lever was partially broken and I had to circulate carefully for a while. ´
