Super six enter title battle over final seven races

The Brno circuit in the Czech Republic is this week preparing to host the tenth round of one of the most open and entertaining 250cc World Championships for several years. Roberto Rolfo's debut victory in the quarter-litre race at the Sachsenring three weeks ago made it six different winners for the season in the class and with only seven races now remaining there are just 25 points separating the same six at the top of the standings. Early season pacesetter Manuel Poggiali, who won the opening two races, still leads the way but with four podium finishes from the last five races Fonsi Nieto has emerged as the strongest current contender and lies just three points adrift in second place.

However, Rolfo is just a further four points behind and the Italian will be looking to improve on a strong showing at this circuit last year when he crashed out of a thrilling fight for victory with Marco Melandri on the penultimate lap. In contrast this is just one of two circuits on the Grand Prix calendar where Poggiali has not taken a podium finish in any class, and after four races without a win the former 125cc World Champion will have to show great character to hang on to his series lead this weekend.

Toni Elias will be hoping to repeat his victory here in the 125cc race two years ago as he looks to get his championship challenge back on track. After two straight wins earlier in the season at Jerez and Le Mans Elias has yet to return to the podium and is in danger of slipping out of the title chase after taking just 48 points from the last five races. Randy De Puniet is now just a point behind the Spaniard in fifth place and Anthony West a further point behind in sixth. After his debut win at Assen earlier in the season, privateer West will be looking to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Australia's first ever premier-class Grand Prix victory with another top performance against his factory rivals.
