Davide Brivio reflects on an improving season for Fortuna Yamaha

The 2003 World Championship started off in the worst possible way for the Fortuna Yamaha Team, with injury to Marco Melandri in qualifying for the first race and a period of indifferent results for Carlos Checa. However, both Melandri and Checa have enjoyed their share of the headlines for the right reasons over the last few races and have edged gradually closer to the podium positions as the season enters the crucial final stages. Team Director Davide Brivio admits the team have taken longer than expected to start reaching their targets, but insists he is happy with the recent progress of his machines and riders and is hopeful of a victory before the end of the season.

"Our recent improvements in Barcelona, Assen, Donington and Brno mean we are closer to where we hoped to be at this stage of the season, and hopefully the next few races will give us some podium finishes," comments the Italian, who saw Checa put in his best performance of the season with a stirring ride to fourth place last Sunday. "During the winter we introduced a fuel injection system, which was quite a new change for Yamaha and took quite a while to set up. Also during the winter schedule we were really unfortunate with the weather as it was raining a lot of the time, and we wasted time.

"Those two elements didn't help our technical situation but despite that our lap times were quite good. At the most recent races we have got better and better in terms of rider confidence, and the bike is better in terms of fine tuning. The year so far has been tough because our target is to win races, and so we're doing everything we can to achieve that target. Everyone in the Fortuna Yamaha Team, the Yamaha engineers and the riders are focused to getting there. When you are in this situation you need to work more and harder than everyone else. We have a good base now and hope to progress from here.

"Despite the difficult start we have been more consistently in the top qualifying and race positions at the past few races. Carlos has moved up in the championship, and Marco is now fully recovered physically. Now the target is to be on the podium as much as possible in any position including of course, first. That's what we hope for as a team now. We would like to have our riders moving up in the riders championship standings and at the same time better our position in the team championship.

"Carlos has had a mid-season improvement and now he should be in a position to fight for a podium at every race. Marco was very much penalised by his injury at the first race, which caused him a big delay at the start of the season. We have since had the chance to see that he has a big talent and huge potential, particularly obvious in Donington and Sachsenring. He was prevented from any activity at all for a whole month, so now we are working with him to help to express his talent on the circuit, one step at a time. I think that he is already capable of getting a podium and our target is to get that before the end of the season."
