Rodriguez and Simon test for Gilera alongside Derbi at Almería

After winning the World Championship with Manuel Poggiali in 2001 and finishing runner-up with the same rider last season, Gilera have endured a disappointing 2003 with promising Italian rider Stefano Bianco and are already considering their options for next year. On Thursday and Friday young Spanish pair Angel Rodriguez and Julian Simon completed two days of tests with the factory at the Almería circuit, lapping alongside sister factory Derbi's Grand Prix regulars Emilio Alzamora and Jorge Lorenzo.

Whilst Simon is already riding in the World Championship with Malaguti, Rodriguez has been out of action since falling out with former team boss Jorge Martinez Aspar midway through last season, when he was dropped from the squad which also includes Hector Barbera and Pablo Nieto. A spokesman for Gilera said that they were delighted with Rodriguez's adaptation to the machine and revealed that he had clocked up over 400km before crashing on Friday morning.

Although that signalled the end of the test for Gilera, Alzamora and Lorenzo continued lapping until the circuit closed at 6pm as they worked to find a base set-up for their machines ahead of the next round of the 125cc World Championship at Estoril in two weeks' time.

Unofficial lap times

Jorge Lorenzo 1'42.9
Angel Rodríguez 1'43.9
Julián Simón 1'44.4
Emilio Alzamora 1'45.0
