Pedrosa on pole after hectic finale

125cc World Championship leader Dani Pedrosa took pole position for the Cinzano Rio Grand Prix with a late, late effort in scorching conditions at the Nelson Piquet Circuit today. Alex De Angelis had defended his provisional pole throughout the session but came under fierce attack from several rider in the dying moments. Any one of four or five riders could have ended up at the top of the time sheets but with intense traffic filling the narrow track only Pedrosa and Honda colleague Andrea Dovizioso were able to find a clean passage and significantly improve their times to gatecrash the front row.

With Pedrosa jumping from eighth to first on his last lap, Dovizioso rose from even further back to snatch third from Gabor Talmacsi. However, Hungarian rider Talmacsi hung on to fourth position and only his second ever front row start – his other having come at this circuit last season, when he rode to his best ever finish of fourth. Jorge Lorenzo was denied his second consecutive front row start as he was push back to fifth, whilst Stefano Perugini was unable to improve on sixth as he fell at the end of the session. Hector Barbera and Steve Jenkner took the final second row positions as Gino Borsoi was unable to improve on his provisional front row qualifying time.
