Pedrosa streaks to ninth pole

Dani Pedrosa took his ninth pole position in the 125cc class by a clear margin in the Japanese sunshine at Motegi this afternoon, setting a best time of 1'57.736 to beat his own previous pole record at the circuit and secure the front spot on d the grid by a clear 0.822 second advantage over nearest challenger Stefano Perugini. The Spaniard holds a 42 point advantage over the Italian in the championship, and would seal the title if he could take back-to-back victories here and in Malaysia.

Perugini set his best lap at the very end of a relatively sterile session devoid of serious challengers to Pedrosa's seniority. Jorge Lorenzo, winner of the last race at Rio, sealed his third front row start of the season in third place whilst Hector Barbera made it three Spaniards in the top four.

Provisional pole setter Andrea Dovizioso was unable to improve his time today and slipped to the second row in fifth place, ahead of Pablo Nieto, Lucio Cecchinello and Alex De Angelis. Casey Stoner was also unable to improve his provisional time and he dropped to tenth place behind a resurgent Stefano Bianco.
