Valentino Rossi (1st): "We are setting a good rhythm here – it's possible to make very long slides and to have good fun. The circuit is a little like Rio. We had to be very careful on the track this morning as there was not much grip – if you try too hard you lose the front and also the rear. We are not yet 100% but we are in a good position on the first day."

Makoto Tamada (2nd): "I don't know if everyone was pushing as hard as they could but if the weather does change I have a good position. I used a soft tyre which gave us the results we were hoping for although the race tyre wasn't perfect. The track's slippery and we have to find a solution which will last for 21 laps."

Max Biaggi (3rd): "Obviously the bike is different compared to the one I rode in winter so we started as usual with the general set up. Now there are more things we can change and modify and we are trying to adapt the bike to the different layout and, above all to the extreme weather conditions. We saved the soft tyre for tomorrow, as I expect most people will have done."

Loris Capirossi (4th): "The track was wet for much of this morning, so we couldn't try some of the settings we wanted to try. Anyway, we made a few changes for this afternoon but we still lack some traction coming out of the corners. This track is very slippery in the heat, so we need to work at solving that problem for tomorrow and Sunday. But I'm happy with my lap times so far and I'm very confident that we can work to go faster tomorrow, when we will also be able to use my qualifying tyres to get some good qualifying laps."
