Quotes from the final front row four

Valentino Rossi (1st): "We decided to change tactic for today's qualifying session. We have two qualifying tyres and decided to use one midway through the session and one at the end because we usually run out of time. To set a 2'02.4 is fantastic. We just need to choose a tyre for the race now but we will wait until tomorrow."

Carlos Checa (2nd): "I am really pleased with my lap time today, which is a personal best. I wasn't expecting to go that fast. I have felt comfortable with this set-up not only in Motegi but also here where we have gradually made some small adjustments. This is a great boost for the team, and I want to thank them for their hard work." Makoto Tamada (3rd): "The race setting isn't perfect yet and we need to make some more changes. The rear tyre we have found for the race is good but possibly won't let me ride for 21 laps on the offensive."

Max Biaggi (4th): "My pace was better than yesterday, it was more consistent, but I didn't get a chance to complete a flying lap and I ran out of time to fit a qualifying tyre. I used a soft tyre to get my time, but not a qualifier, or the race tyre. I think I can run a good race tomorrow. The heat makes it really hard on tyres and it's going to be tough out there."
