De Puniet sets best time and Poggiali crashes twice on final day in Jerez

The ideal weather conditions at Jerez on Wednesday gave Aprilia the perfect opportunity to run through some new parts for 2004. Factory star and current 250cc World Champion Manuel Poggiali did not seem too comfortable with the updates, however, crashing twice and slightly injuring his arm. The San Marino rider came off first at the Sito Pons corner but escaped uninjured, only to crash again in the exit of turn one and badly bruise his right arm. It marked the end of the session for Poggiali, who had set a best lap of 1'45.2 after 30 laps.

Factory colleague Randy De Puniet had better fortunes, meanwhile, maintaining a consistently quick rhythm and dropping his times to an impressive 1'44.2, just over a second slower than the Ducati of Troy Bayliss, who was also testing at the Spanish circuit.

Meanwhile, Youchi Ui continued his adaptation to the 250cc Aprilia kit which has has been testing since Monday with the aim of stepping up to the quarter-litre class next season. The Japanese rider set a best time of 1'47.3.
