Elias fights hard for first Honda win

Winner of last year race aboard the Aprilia, Toni Elias was back on the first step of the podium at Estoril, as a Honda rider this time. The Spanish youngster took his first win since he joined the Honda stable during the winter.

Elias won a tough battle against Sebastian Porto. The Argentinean was the fastest off the line while poleman Dani Pedrosa conceded positions to Toni Elias and Randy de Puniet in the early stages of the race.

The fight at the front quickly settled into two duels as Porto and Elias fought over the lead while de Puniet and Pedrosa diced for third. Porto and Elias exchanged positions several times, but Elias eventually managed to create the gap on the last lap to take the win. De Puniet had to be wary of Pedrosa until the very end, as the series leader rode strongly in the final.

Alex de Angelis took fifth ahead of Ant West, Manuel Poggiali and Alex Debon. Hiroshi Aoyama and Roberto Rolfo completed the top 10.

By winning in Portugal, Toni Elias took some crucial points off title contenders: Pedrosa still leads the Championship with 209 points, an advantage of 27 points over de Puniet and 36 points over Porto.
