Poleman Loris Capirossi was back on the top of the timesheets for the warm-up session on Sunday morning, ahead of the 24-lap GP of Japan. The Ducati Marlboro rider completed the session just 0.168s ahead of John Hopkins, who will start from second on the grid. Third fastest was Spaniard Sete Gibernau, followed by Championship leader Valentino Rossi.

Kenny Roberts Jr was the second Suzuki rider in the top five, beating local hero Makoto Tamada by 0.049s. Kawasaki's Shinya Nakano was seventh fastest ahead of Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi, while Colin Edwards completed the top 10.

Dani Pedrosa was the fastest in the 250cc class, kicking off his recovery after suffering three crashes over the two previous days. The World Champion, who will start from a lowly seventh on the grid, was followed by three Japanese riders, the Aoyama brothers Hiroshi and Shuhei and Yukia Takahashi, while Italian Andrea Dovizioso completed an all-Honda top 5.

In the 125 class, Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio, who crashed yesterday in the late stages of the final qualifying session, set the pace ahead of title rival and current series leader Thomas Lüthi, while poleman Gabor Talmacsi was third fastest.
