Puig : `We have confidence in our bike"

Dani Pedrosa's arrival in MotoGP has been a source of great expectation, and his results in preseason have shown a strong adaptation to the premier class on the RC211V.

Alberto Puig, mentor for the young Barcelona rider, gave motogp.com an evaluation of his protégé's work ahead of next week's season-opener.

How has the winter testing gone?

"We're happy. The results have been positive and every session has gone well. The bike has undergone a transformation since November, and now it's more compact and more appropriate for a rider of Dani's size."

After the final tests, a lot of people have said that the Honda looked out of sorts…

"Each team is different and everyone has their own opinion. We think that the bike is competitive. It's one that has won races and we are confident that it can continue like that."

Perhaps the idea that Honda are underachieving emanates from Rossi and Yamaha's good form....

"Sure, Yamaha are going well, I'm sure that they have improved. But you can see that in Jerez they had problems, and that the perfect bike doesn't exist. We focus on our own work instead of other teams."

How do you see Pedrosa's preseason work?

"Adapting to a new category is always difficult, but I think Dani has understood what he needed to do and worked hard. The collaboration with Michelin has also been very positive, with Dani understanding the response of both bike and tyres."

How has the team coped with the expectation for Pedrosa?

"The pressure is something outside of the box. Dani is cerebral, cold to such things, and he knows that his work is the most important thing."

Any final comments on the new season?

"As a rule, we don't comment on what we can achieve. I think that it will be a difficult year, but we can be excited because we have all the tools to do well."
