Roberts Jr shows early form

Kenny Roberts Jr showed his cards early at his home circuit of Laguna Seca, becoming the only rider to break the 1'24 barrier at the scene of Sunday's Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. The former World Champion's fastest lap of 1'23.951 was enough to put him ahead of second-placed Colin Edwards and newcomer to the track Casey Stoner.

John Hopkins was fourth, followed by last year's podium finisher Valentino Rossi, Marco Melandri, Chris Vermeulen and World Championship leader Nicky Hayden. Spaniards Carlos Checa and Sete Gibernau rounded off the top ten.
