Positive feeling for Derbi Racing trio at Portuguese test

Positive feeling for Derbi Racing trio at Portuguese test

Spanish threesome Pol Espargaró, Joan Olivé and Efrén Vázquez all completed their workloads satisfactorily with their team Derbi Racing at Estoril this week.

Although they each had different objectives to meet for various reasons at the Estoril test Derbi Racing’s Spanish trio of Pol Espargaró, Joan Olivé and Efrén Vázquez all left Portugal with a sense of satisfaction having made forward steps ahead of the 2009 season.

Espargaró was the third fastest 125cc rider participating in the third and final session on Tuesday and the second quickest overall. He stated, “The wind was quite strong on the last morning and we couldn’t improve on the best times from Monday. I was trying a new front fork and some different settings with the engine. I am quite happy overall with how things went and we’ve learned a lot of things which should help us to be competitive at the beginning of the season.”

Meanwhile, Espargaró’s team-mate Olivé, fifth on the final day and sixth overall with a best time of 1’46.703, concentrated on chassis settings and put in plenty of time and kilometers on track.

He commented, “I had to work really hard here. I did more than 90 laps on the last day which at Estoril means more than 350km! But I’m pleased with the work we did on the chassis and how the preseason has started.”

For Vázquez it was a chance to get back on his bike having injured his ankle in a test at Valencia last month. He admitted, “Things went pretty well actually and better than I expect, especially as I was hardly able to ride on the first day. I did 28 laps even though my leg still hurts a lot and I managed to knock two seconds off my lap times over the course of the test. I’m not far away from getting back to 100% so I just have to keep working on my rehab.”
