Lüthi goes top in Catalunya morning practice

In hot conditions at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya it was Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi who went top in the first Moto2™ free practice ahead of Pons 40 HP Tuenti’s Pol Espargaró.

Lüthi started where he left off in Le Mans, by topping the timesheet in the first practice session at the Catalunya track with a 1.46’597, over half a second faster than local rider Espargaró. The Catalan rider will be looking for a good result at his home Grand Prix, as he aims to extend his one-point lead in the championship. Behind him in third was Marc VDS Racing Team’s Scott Redding, who is looking for a repeat of his podium in France.

S/Master Speed Up’s Mike Di Meglio was on good form as he posted the fourth fastest time of the day, ahead of Redding’s teammate Mika Kallio. In sixth place, JiR Moto2 rookie Johann Zarco looks to have put his crash in Le Mans behind him, and to have seemingly gained some extra pace in dry conditions.

Espargaró’s teammate Rabat came in seventh, in front of NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Alex De Angelis, who very skilfully saved a near low-side crash. Technomag-CIP’s Dominique Aegerter was only marginally behind in ninth, while last race’s podium sitter Claudio Corti rounded out the top ten with his Italtrans Racing Team machine. Home favourite, Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol’s Marc Márquez, was almost 1.4s down on Lüthi in 12th.

Speed Master’s Andrea Iannone suffered a crash in turn 3, yet was able to continue, while GP Team Switzerland’s Randy Krummenacher also came off towards the end. Both riders escaped unhurt.
