Espargaró sets the pace in Silverstone first free practice

Pons 40 HP Tuenti’s Pol Espargaró set the early pace in the first Moto2™ free practice session at the Hertz British Grand Prix in Silverstone ahead of Bradley Smith and Ricky Cardús.

After the two preceding Moto3™ and MotoGP™ practice session were held in very wet and cold conditions, the Moto2 field was greeted with sunshine, which slowly started to dry out the track. Espargaró left it late to set the best time of 2.23’503, ahead of Tech 3 Racing’s local rider Smith, who was just over two tenths behind. Surprise inclusion in the top three was Arguiñano Racing Team’s Cardús, though a full second off the top.

Fourth place is occupied by Marc VDS Racing Team’s Scott Redding, who is looking to put on a good show in front of his home fans, as he heads his teammate Mika Kallio. Interwetten-Paddock’s championship leader Tom Lüthi finished sixth fastest, ahead of JiR Moto2’s Johann Zarco.

In eighth spot, Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol’s Marc Márquez was having a subdued session, ahead of S/Master Speed Up’s Mike Di Meglio. Rounding out the top ten is NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Yuki Takahashi.

With track conditions still very wet when the practice began, Desguaces La Torre SAG’s Angel Rodriguez was caught out early on with a crash, followed shortly by GP Team Switzerland’s Randy Krummenacher. JiR Moto2’s debutant, 16-year-old Brazilian Eric Granado, crashed out on his debut towards the end of the session, followed by Espargaró’s teammate Axel Pons.
