Granado sets new lap record to beat Aegerter in Jerez Test

A 1:47.065 in the final stages of the second and final FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup Official Jerez Test means Eric Granado (One Energy Racing) ends 2021 pre-season testing top of the timesheets with a new lap record. Second fastest Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP) is less than a tenth behind the Brazilian heading into Round 1, with Xavier Cardelus (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) closing out the top three.

Aegerter, winner of Tuesday’s race simulation, had long been the rider to beat at the second pre-season test in Andalucia. The Swiss star set a new lap record in said race simulation, then went quicker again on Wednesday morning – a 1:47.106 – to further demonstrate his superiority at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto. However, Granado’s final outing of the test saw him set his fastest time, giving him the bragging rights ahead of the opening World Cup encounter of 2021 at the end of April. The duo were nearly half a second clear of the chasing pack, a real gauntlet thrown down.

The fastest rookie on the combined times, just behind third place Cardelus and fourth best Alessandro Zaccone (Octo Pramac MotoE), was 16-year-old Fermin Aldeguer (Openbank Aspar Team). The young Spaniard was 0.695s shy of Granado’s time as he becomes acquainted with the Energica Ego Corsa, and impressively, Aldeguer finished ahead of reigning World Cup winner Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) – 0.082s to be exact. Very impressive from the rookie, his more experienced compatriot Torres ended the test in P6.

Another rookie in the form of Miquel Pons (LCR E-Team) is also under a second from Granado’s new lap record in P7, both Pons and Aldeguer finished inside the top three in the race simulation, so they’re definitely a couple of new faces to look out for this season.

Just behind Pons is Lukas Tulovic (Tech3 E-Racing), the German rider is just over a second away from Granado in P8. A familiar face to many, former MotoGP™ rider Yonny Hernandez (Octo Pramac MotoE) ended the three-day test P9, 1.168s from top spot, with Hikari Okubo (Avant Ajo MotoE) – another rookie – breaking into the top 10 thanks to his 1:48.242.

After a busy three days on track, the MotoE™ riders will be present in Jerez again at the Spanish GP for the start of their 2021 season, taking place between the 30th of April and 2nd of May.
