It’s time to get to know Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Brad Binder a little better. The two-time MotoGP™ race winner and 2016 Moto3™ World Champion is a popular star around the world, but how well do you know the South African? Here’s 10 things you probably didn’t know about the number 33.
1. If Binder was going to trade places with a fellow athlete for a day, who would it be? Sticking with a profession Binder has become a world-beater in, the South African, if given the opportunity, would like to become F1 World Champion and fellow Red Bull star Max Verstappen for a day. A very good choice in the eyes of many.
2. There are many things that riders like to do after they’ve finished at the track on a Sunday post-race. Going out for food and drinks is the obvious one, but Binder? Go home and do nothing. Simply chill out after an intense weekend both on and off track.
3. Binder, like most of us, has at least one thing he’s scared of. One phobia of his is snakes, something a few of us can definitely relate to, and the other? MotoGP™ Q1. Sitting outside the top 10 after the first three Free Practice sessions is something that no rider wants to experience.
4. Of course, MotoGP™ isn’t the only sport that Binder partakes in. Away from the hectic life as a Grand Prix motorcycle racer, Binder likes to cycle – which is also his favourite form of outdoor training – play golf and go fishing.
5. As well as cycling, golfing and fishing, something Binder is able to do when at home between races is play the guitar. Maybe a Brad Binder and Johann Zarco band is in the making when they retire from MotoGP™?
6. A very popular question to ask people is who they would have as dream dinner guests. As an avid golfer, Binder’s choice of Tiger Woods is unsurprising. Michael Jordan, rightly touted as one of the greatest athletes to ever live, would be another guest around Binder’s dinner table. And the other is American singer-songwriting legend, Johnny Cash.
7. From three Americans to another, the former rider who Binder would pick to be his teammate would be 1993 500cc World Champion, Kevin Schwantz.
8. MotoGP™ races on phenomenal circuits from across the globe, but what track that isn’t on the calendar would be the one Binder would choose to ride his KTM RC16 on? The famous Kyalami, in Binder’s beloved South Africa.
9. Unsurprisingly, Binder’s chef skills are at their peak when there’s a braai involved – South Africa’s answer to the beloved BBQ.
10. And finally, pets are part of a lot of households across the world. Some of the riders have dogs they often take photos with but Binder's pet isn’t a traditional one. Oscar the parrot, who we met during lockdown, has been part of the family since the day before younger brother Darryn Binder was born.
