Morbidelli heads Rossi in rain-affected Warm Up

Riders at the top of the timesheets set their laps in dry conditions as rain falls in Spielberg

While the track had just dried from overnight and early morning rain, Petronas Yamaha SRT’s Franco Morbidelli set a 1:28.803 to lead the way in MotoGP™ Warm Up at the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich. Compatriot Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and third place Karel Abraham (Reale Avintia Racing) also set their best times on slick tyres before the rain started to fall.

The riders were about to get some more dry track time in ahead of the race this afternoon but the heavens opened with 12 minutes of Warm Up remaining, meaning the premier class would put in the wet tyres for 10 minutes of wet weather running. Polesitter Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) was quickest in the final stages of the session, but you can’t read too much into the Warm Up times at the Red Bull Ring.

Will the weather play a leading role at the Austrian GP? Forecasts predict a dry MotoGP™ race and if so, do we have a Marquez vs Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) Spielberg Round 2 on the cards? You don’t want to miss any of the action, and it all kicks off at 14:00 local time (GMT+2).
