Action commences in the heat at Catalunya circuit

On a hot afternoon at Montmeló Spanish rider Julián Simón was the fastest rider in the first Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya practice session.

With sunny conditions expected all weekend in Barcelona the 125cc riders commenced the action in high temperatures in their first free practice session, with Bancaja Aspar’s Julián Simón emerging as the fastest participant.

As the ambient temperature reached 32°C close to the Mediterranean coast and the asphalt got up to 42°C Simón showed no signs of wilting as he marked a 1’52.311 time on the 15th of his 19 laps to state his intentions to his rivals.

Indeed it was a Spanish dominated top four courtesy of the efforts of Simón’s team-mate Sergio Gadea, Nico Terol (Jack & Jones Team) and local rider Pol Espargaró (Derbi Racing Team), who all lapped within a second of the paceman.

Italian Lorenzo Zanetti (Ongetta Team I.S.P.A.), German Sandro Cortese (Ajo Interwetten), Spaniard Marc Márquez (Red Bull KTM), Briton Scott Redding (Blusens Aprilia), Swiss competitor Randy Krummenacher (Degraaf Grand Prix) and Andrea Iannone (Ongetta Team I.S.P.A.) were all in the top ten, all going round less than 1.5s slower than Simón.

World Championship leader Bradley Smith, who also rides for Bancaja Aspar, lapped 1.513s off Simón’s pace in 11th place on the timesheet.
