Der Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto war am Samstag Schauplatz einer ganz besonderen Präsentation, als die FIM und Dorna Sports ein neues Projekt ankündigten: die FIM Women's Motorcycling World Championship. Der neue Wettbewerb soll Frauen den Zugang zum Motorradrennsport erleichtern und eine Plattform für die Repräsentation von Fahrerinnen schaffen.
Beim Start im Jahr 2024 wird die Serie parallel zur MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship laufen. Das Ziel für die erste Saison sind mindestens sechs Runden, wobei zwei Rennen pro Runde stattfinden sollen. Das Starterfeld wird auf gleichen Maschinen fahren, wobei ein einziger Motorradlieferant zu gegebener Zeit bekannt gegeben werden soll.
Die neue Meisterschaft soll Fahrerinnen, die bereits an Rennen teilnehmen, Chancen eröffnen und ihnen ein Umfeld bieten, in dem sie eine professionelle Karriere im Motorradrennsport aufbauen können. Gleichzeitig soll die Serie den Grundstein für eine gleichberechtigte Vertretung in allen Fahrerlagern der Zukunft legen. Die Serie ist ein positives Beispiel für angehende Rennfahrerinnen und unterstreicht, dass Motorradfahren ein Sport ist, den alle genießen können, auf und neben der Strecke.
Jorge Viegas, FIM-Präsident: "Seit 1904 ist es die erste FIM-Frauen-Weltmeisterschaft. Ich hoffe, Euch gefällt das Logo, es ist für uns alle eine Überraschung!“
"Wir haben lange darüber nachgedacht und es gab eine große Nachfrage. Wie im Motocross, Enduro und Trial werden wir nächstes Jahr auch im Rundstreckenrennen mit einer Frauen-Weltmeisterschaft beginnen. Unser Plan ist es, sechs Rennen in Europa zu veranstalten, und wir planen, den Wettbewerb mit einer einzigen Marke durchzuführen. Wir werden versuchen, Frauen aus der ganzen Welt in dieser neuen Meisterschaft antreten zu lassen. Sie wird hauptsächlich im Rahmen der WorldSBK-Meisterschaft organisiert werden.“
Gregorio Lavilla, WorldSBK Executive Director: "Als ich über dieses Projekt und seine Möglichkeiten informiert wurde, habe ich mich sehr dafür interessiert und war begeistert. Wir waren der Meinung, dass die World Superbike Plattform einer der Orte sein könnte, um dieses Projekt zu starten.“
"We don't have all the details yet, this is a live project, evolving all the time. It's important that we expand the opportunities available, and especially seeing a lot of Cups and projects that we've started, I think it's a big challenge but all of us must be proud of being able to offer this opportunity. At the end of the season I would like to see a good progression for the future ahead in order to have more riders and more possibilities in this sport.
"The best platform to start with is a single brand, and we've been discussing it informally with manufacturers already. We will start to define the details, but we expect something in a similar range to Supersport displacement. There has been a lot of interest but this is a project that is progressing, and can progress through the years to expand with different manufacturers, teams... we want to create a destination where female riders from around the world can join the Championship and find professional success. That means we can also explore new ways to promote the motorcycle industry. If we start from zero, we can be more creative. Like I said from my side, I will put in my full commitment to make it happen and to make it work at the standard that we want, and hopefully, we can be successful and enjoy it."
Françoise Emery, FIM CEO: "We created a commission for women in motorcycle for more than twenty years now so it is not really anything new in the FIM. We try to promote and support the women in motorcycle racing. What we try to do is offer female riders all opportunities and possibilities for them to ride, and as mentioned by the FIM President, we already have championships in Motocross, Enduro and Trial. So now we are pleased to launch a women’s Championship in circuit racing."
