PONS Racing closes a stage as Sito Pons faces a new era

After 42 years and five rider's World titles, three team titles, 71 victories and more than 230 podiums, Sito Pons' team will leave the Moto2™ World Championship at the end of this season

Sito Pons and PONS Racing have spent 42 seasons in the MotoGP™ World Championship and next season will not be present in the intermediate category of the Championship. PONS Racing leaves the category in a considered decision and does so with great satisfaction for the good work done.

Throughout these years in Moto2™, the team has been one of the protagonists of the championship and the best riders who today compete in MotoGP have passed through it: Pol and Aleix Espargaro, Fabio Quartararo, Maverick Viñales, Alex Rins and Augusto Fernandez. Undoubtedly, PONS Racing has contributed to the development of all of them and together they achieved great successes.

But the history of PONS Racing goes back much further, from the two World Championship titles of Sito Pons himself in 1988 and 1989. In 1992 he would make the jump to 500cc alongside Álex Crivillé, who would achieve the first victory by a Spanish rider in the category. Pons managed to make his team the last to win the team title by beating the official teams. Among all his riders, the Spanish riders Álex Crivillé, Alberto Puig, Carlos Checa, as well as the riders Alex Barros, Loris Capirossi, Max Biaggi, Troy Bayliss, Tohru Ukawa.

In the second stage in the intermediate category, PONS Racing was the last team to achieve victory in the now defunct 250cc class with Héctor Barbera and in 2013 it achieved success by winning the Moto2™ title with Pol Espargaró, adding two more team World Championship titles, as well as two titles in the MotoE™ World Cup with Jordi Torres, in 2020 and 2021.

With more than 230 podiums and 71 victories in its track record, PONS Racing takes a step aside and can only thank all the sponsors who have trusted in the sporting project for so many years, as well as all the riders who have defended its colours and the staff. To all of them, thank you for the trust, without them it would not have been possible to achieve the successes that have been achieved and to enjoy them together is what has always given meaning to the project.

From 2024, the PONS Racing seats will become the property of the MT Helmets - MSi team in the Moto3™ category, a team owned by Teo Martín, ensuring the continuity of most of the PONS Racing staff, one of the premises for this acquisition to take place.

There are 10 Grand Prix remaining this season and PONS Racing will focus on continuing to fight to achieve the best possible results with its two riders, Aron Canet and Sergio García, and to say goodbye in the best possible way.

Sito Pons (Pons Wegow Los40 Team Principal): "Sometimes you have to make certain decisions and I think now is the time to close this very successful period that we have enjoyed with the team. From my time as a rider, it's 42 years in the championship and when we made the project we knew we wanted to be a protagonist team and season after season we have always been fighting among the best. And our time in MotoGP was very successful, as well as the years in Moto2.

"I am proud to have contributed to the development of the sporting careers of all these riders and that some of them are still protagonists in MotoGP today. The commitment of PONS Racing has always been to support the Spanish riders and to serve as a launch path for them in MotoGP and we have done so, providing them with the best tools to achieve the best results and training them both professionally and personally. I can't forget all the sponsors who have been part of the team. We have always felt supported and thanks to them we have been able to carry out all these projects. My most sincere thanks. And also to all the drivers, mechanics and team staff who have put their trust in PONS Racing.

"People are what make the team work and we have been lucky to have the best. I also want to thank all MotoGP, Dorna and IRTA for their constant help and support. Now it's time to step aside and face the future with optimism. We will always see each other on the circuits."
