Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) delivered a stunning performance on Sunday, dominating from lights out to claim the maximum 25 points available. The Italian star crossed the line 2.583s clear of Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP), who finished as the runner-up after previously winning Saturday’s Sprint. Completing the podium was Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), whose search for a maiden win continues. As the dust begins to settle, catch up on the hottest talking points from Portugal!
"I spent the evening with the team in the box"
Marco Bezzecchi looked unstoppable on Sunday, converting pole position into victory after a remarkable display. The Italian star looked comfortable, becoming the sixth different winner in a row as 2025 remains as unpredictable as ever. The #72’s confidence grows ahead of the final round of the season as he puts his Sunday success down to some Saturday night changes.
Bezzecchi: "It’s Fantastic to get the victory! Yesterday I was happy but not completely, because when you start from pole position, you always hope for something more. Yesterday Alex, and also Pedro were stronger than me. I spent the evening with the team in the box to try to analyse where I could be better, where we could improve. We found something that helped me with these weaknesses that I have."
"Marco was faster than us"
Alex Marquez had a strong weekend at Portimao, charging from the second row of the grid to P2 on Sunday. The #73 was unable to complete the Portimao double following his Sprint win, and now leaves Round 21 with an extra 32 points to his name. Reflecting on the weekend as a whole, Alex recognised Bezzecchi’s pace, adding that he had to work hard for second.
Alex Marquez: "Honestly speaking, today Marco was faster than us. He was braver. He had a clearer idea from Warm Up. I saw him flying and I said, 'It will be tough.' But I said, 'There's nothing to lose. We will try to go with him.' I saw that the pace was super-fast. But at that point, I destroyed my front tyre on the right side. In the end, it was difficult to keep the lap times, to keep the pace. I struggled to keep the second place, also with Pedro. But I tried my best."
"It’s exactly what we wanted to do after the summer break"
Another Grand Prix, another podium for Pedro Acosta. The KTM star took a solid rostrum finish on Sunday, crossing the line in third after showing consistent pace throughout. Acosta qualified on the front row, finishing in second in the Sprint before his third on Sunday. It was another clear step for the #37, who continues to search for his first premier class win.
Acosta: "It was not easy. We know that normally we suffer in these kinds of races. Normally, we start with lower grip compared to our competitors. But anyway, I think we managed in the best way possible. We are on the podium again. It’s exactly what we wanted to do after the summer break, to try and find this consistency inside the top five. It looks like we have now found this.
"We have to be happy because at the beginning of the season, we were struggling a lot compared to now."
"I knew there was something special prepared"
It was an emotional weekend for Miguel Oliveira (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP), who crossed the line in P14. However, it wasn’t about the result for Oliveira and the Portuguese fans as they took a moment pre-GP to celebrate his MotoGP career. Following the Grand Prix, Oliveira soaked in the celebrations, stating that some weight is now off his shoulders.
Oliveira: "After my daughter gave me the flag at the beginning, it was difficult to put on the helmet and go racing! But, yeah, I finished the race and it felt like 100 kilos got off my shoulders, in a good sense. It was an emotional and special event for sure.
"The opening ceremony… I knew there was something special prepared, but I could not have anticipated this. It was very special, very unique and was also deserved. Because I’ve had quite a unique career in MotoGP. I thought it was quite deserved, but, for me, it was a special moment and looking back and seeing all the guys applauding and cheering was the highest recognition a rider can get."
"These are not the results that we want"
It was another tough day at the office for Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), who suffered another DNF – scoring just two points across the weekend. Bagnaia dropped further points to Bezzecchi in the World Championship standings, with Acosta closing in. Leaving the weekend, Bagnaia is continuing to search for the missing piece, with an important test coming up next week.
Bagnaia: "We are missing something, and we are just trying to solve it for the future, because it's quite hard to understand, and all the team is working on it. I think we did a good job again this weekend, like in Sepang, and we need to continue like this. But these are not the results that we want; we want to fight for the wins, and today an Aprilia won, so we just need to be focused on the big objective."
"My only target today was to finish the race"
Nicolo Bulega (Ducati Lenovo Team) has completed his first weekend in the premier class, with the Italian star filling in for the injured Marc Marquez. Bulega qualified in P18, suffering a setback in the Sprint following a crash. However, he would end the weekend with plenty of positives, finishing inside the points on debut as his attention turns to Valencia.
Bulega: "Honestly, for me today it was very important to finish the race, because yesterday I made a [rookie] mistake. My only target today was to finish the race. In the first laps, I was very calm. I was just trying to warm the front tyre to understand how to brake. And I repeated to myself all the race, 'don't brake like in Superbike, don't brake like in Superbike'.
"It will be a bit difficult, especially on the first day. Because this is my first time in Valencia in MotoGP, in only my second weekend. So it will also be difficult for sure in Valencia. But then I will have a test after the race. So it will be important for me."
