Umberto Masetti cements his place in MotoGP history, being honoured and remembered at the San Marino GP as the two-time MotoGP Champion’s son receives his Hall of Fame medal from MotoGP Group Deputy CEO Carlos Ezpeleta on Saturday afternoon.
Masetti became MotoGP World Champion on two occasions, winning with Gilera in 1950 and 1952. He also finished third in the 1949 125cc World Championship and both the 1951 and 1955 500cc MotoGP Championships.
It’s a celebration of one of MotoGP’s greats, with the Italian clinching 23 podiums from his 33 Grand Prix starts. With experience across the 125cc, 250cc, 350cc and 500cc categories, he remains one of motorcycle racing's most versatile riders.
His place is now confirmed in the same weekend that Libero Liberati was also inducted into the MotoGP Hall of Fame. The new concept was launched in 2025 and adds an extra honour for riders who have MotoGP World Championships and/or 25 or more MotoGP wins. It coexists with the honour of MotoGP Legend, which has different criteria.
Masetti sadly passed away in 2006, so his son, Nello Masetti, attended the San Marino GP, where MotoGP Group Deputy CEO Carlos Ezpeleta presented the medal before Saturday’s Tissot Sprint – celebrating an icon and a MotoGP Hall of Famer.
