Doohan: Adelaide ready to welcome MotoGP

Fresh from his Hall of Fame induction, Mick Doohan backs Adelaide to bring MotoGP into the heart of the city — and closer to a new generation of fans

Fresh from being inducted into the MotoGP Hall of Fame during the Red Bull Australian Grand Prix this weekend, Mick Doohan believes the championship's future in Adelaide presents an exciting opportunity for both the sport and its fans.

Few people understand what makes a great motorsport event quite like Doohan, and the five-time World Champion says bringing MotoGP into the heart of Adelaide will create an experience that extends far beyond the racing itself.

"Adelaide will be an amazing event as a whole," Doohan said. While the competition on track will remain as thrilling as ever, he believes the city's accessibility will transform the fan experience, “visitors will be able to fly in, head straight to their hotels and the circuit, and immerse themselves in an atmosphere where the event becomes part of the city itself.”

For MotoGP, that accessibility could be a game changer. A street circuit setting in the heart of Adelaide has the potential to introduce the sport to new audiences, creating opportunities for more people to experience the spectacle of Grand Prix motorcycle racing up close. Doohan said: “there is no doubt that the event will help attract a new generation of fans while making the championship more accessible than ever before.”

Adelaide's reputation as a host city is also a major factor behind his enthusiasm. According to Doohan, every event he has attended in Adelaide has been "spectacular", with a welcoming atmosphere and a city that embraces major sporting occasions. Rather than being confined to the circuit, the event becomes woven into the fabric of the city, creating a festival-like environment that benefits visitors, locals and the sport alike.

"For the town, it's going to be amazing. Every event they hold the whole city and state gets behind it to make it an incredible occasion" he said, describing MotoGP as another major event capable of capturing the city's imagination.

And while comparisons with other global motorsport events are inevitable, Doohan believes MotoGP brings its own unique energy. The championship's combination of world-class athletes, incredible machines and close racing has made it one of the most exciting spectacles in sport, and he expects Adelaide to provide the perfect stage for that excitement to shine.

For riders, teams and fans, MotoGP in Adelaide promises more than just a race weekend. It offers the prospect of a city-wide celebration, where the passion of motorcycle racing meets one of Australia's most vibrant event destinations. If Doohan's prediction proves correct, Adelaide will not simply host MotoGP, it will embrace it.
