Donetsk-born (Rostov region) Leonov has taken part in races across a variety of classes since his maiden competition at the age of 12. Spells in 125cc and 250cc Motocross, Superstock and Supersport series honed his skills and convinced Stefan Kiefer to sign him up for a big chance to shine as a category newcomer in 2009, riding for the Viessmann Kiefer Racing team in their return to the quarter-litre class, using an Aprilia LE.

Leonov’s single point in Japan that year was the first gained by a Russian in the 250cc class in the history of the World Championship. The young rider went on to amass nine points in total, with a best result of tenth place at Le Mans, to finish 24th in his debut season.

This year Leonov remains with the team structure as he moves up to the Moto2 class, riding a Suter machine under the banner of Vector Kiefer Racing.
