Mugello circuit: a masterpiece of technique and adrenaline

Brembo, braking inspiration partner of MotoGP and title sponsor this weekend, previews the legendary venue – and celebrates 50 years of racing

Brembo are celebrating 50 years of racing this year and as part of their celebrations, the official Braking Inspiration Partner of MotoGP are title sponsoring their home Grand Prix of Mugello. The track needs no introduction for the initiated and will likely convert all those who don’t yet know its stunning layout, incredible scenery and legendary atmosphere.

The Mugello circuit, one of the most iconic tracks in the world, is nestled in the Tuscan hills. It’s 5,245 meters long and offers a stunning mix of fast corners, straights, and technical hairpins that challenge both the riders and their machinery. Mugello is also renowned for its long main straight, where motorcycles reach speeds exceeding 350 km/h, demanding impeccable braking system efficiency. The top speed record in MotoGP is just over 366km/h, set at Mugello in 2023 and 2024.

It's known to be flowing but braking here, although limited, is among the most demanding on the entire MotoGP calendar. One of the most critical braking points occurs at the end of the main straight, at the iconic San Donato corner, where riders decelerate from record speeds to around just 92 km/h in mere moments, subjecting the brakes to enormous thermal and mechanical stress. Performance is key.

As we revisit this iconic venue, Brembo celebrates a historic milestone: 50 years of innovation and success in the world of motorsport. In 2025, the company both supplies all 11 MotoGP teams and is the official Braking Inspiration partner of the most exciting sport on Earth – part of which gives fans an extra-special insight into the incredible data behind their stopping power with tailored TV graphics.

Starting this year, Öhlins has also become part of the Brembo Group, further extending its presence in the world of racing. Öhlins main products in MotoGP include the rear shock absorber and the front fork. By combining the expertise of Brembo and Öhlins, riders can rely on unparalleled quality and excellence.

50 years of success: some milestones ahead of Mugello
Brembo made its first appearance in MotoGP in the 500cc World Championship in the second half of the 1970s, supplying components to several private Italian teams. On August 20, 1978, Virginio Ferrari, riding a Suzuki RG500 from the Gallina team equipped with two-piston calipers, an axial pump, and cast iron discs, won the West German Grand Prix in the 500cc class on the legendary Nürburgring circuit, spanning 22.835 kilometres.

A decisive moment for Brembo came in 1983 when Team Agostini, managed by the renowned Giacomo Agostini, chose Brembo brakes for their Yamaha motorcycles. This collaboration led to outstanding results: Eddie Lawson clinched three World Championships in 1984, 1986, and 1988, marking the first victories for a Japanese motorcycle equipped with Italian brakes.

By the late 1980s, Brembo introduced a technological revolution with the thumb brake, used for the first time in racing in 1986.

Towards the late 1990s, Brembo brought another historic innovation to the track: the radial caliper. The first motorcycle to use it was the Aprilia 250 in 1998. With the advent of the modern era in 2002, Brembo continued to dominate competitions, maintaining a streak of victories that started in the 500cc class in 1995 and continues to this day.

The company celebrates its history and toasts the successes of today this weekend with title sponsorship of Mugello, and some lucky guests will also get to enjoy a new hospitality section of their all-new paddock truck set to make its debut. The new Rcs Corsa Corta Limited Edition also celebrates the milestone in style. Produced in just 500 numbered units and designed for fans and professionals, the kit includes a state-of-the-art brake master cylinder featuring a titanium lever pin used in MotoGP and golden tampography that evokes the Brembo symbol. The included brake fluid reservoir has a cap machined from solid aluminium, bearing the Brembo symbol in gold, while a black wristband with a golden logo completes the set. Every detail is contained in a special package dedicated to the company’s 50-year history.
