Lüthi: “It was surprising I could close on him”

Swiss rider takes his third podium in a row at COTA

Tom Lüthi (CarXpert Interwetten) took another podium at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, making him one of only two riders to have started the season with three in a row – but the other man to have done that is Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS), who has won three from three.

Veteran Lüthi knows the season is long, however, and knows from 2016 how quickly the colour of the title fight can change – happy to have at least been on the podium, and pushing for the win, at a venue that had previously proven a difficult one for the 2016 Championship runner up.

Tom Lüthi, P2: “In the end it didn’t come to a battle, but it was surprising for me that I could close on him a bit. I didn’t count on that but then I felt good and comfortable so I thought maybe I could catch him. Then I made two or three little really small mistakes and the gap stayed the same. Then towards the end he had more speed, and maybe more tyre left. For me it’s cool to be here in second, we did a great job and big thanks to the team because in the Warm Up they found a good step with the bike and I felt comfortable from then on. It’s cool to be here on this track where I’ve struggled every year to get on the podium. We are strong at the moment, even on tracks where we were struggling before in the past, always on the podium…but it’s always the same guy on top! But we’re there, we’re taking a lot of points and although he’s taken more, the season is long and I’m really looking forward to it.”
