Aron Canet signs with Angel Nieto squad for 2020 Moto2™

The Valencia-based team have signed current Moto3™ title contender for 2020 Moto2™ push

Aron Canet will step up to the Moto2™ World Championship next season with the Sama Qatar Angel Nieto Team. Canet, who currently lies second in the Moto3™ standings, will progress to the intermediate class with the Valencia-based outfit and becomes the first piece of the team’s 2020 jigsaw in Moto2™.

Canet is currently contesting his fourth season at Grand Prix level and is locked in a battle for the Moto3™ title. Two wins and six podiums from the first eleven races of the season mean he lies just a point shy of the leader, going into a crucial final phase of the championship before he embarks on a new challenge together with the Sama Qatar Angel Nieto Team.

Canet becomes the latest rider from Valencia to work with the team since its formation in 1992, following in the tyre tracks of Jorge Martínez, Juan Bautista Borja, Jerónimo Vidal, Álex Debón, Héctor Barberá, Héctor Faubel, Sergio Gadea, Xavi Forés and Nico Terol, amongst others. Alongside these riders, the team have celebrated a World Championship title, two championship runner-up positions, 29 victories and 86 podiums. It is a list of honours that Aron Canet is determined to add to.

Jorge Martínez “Aspar”: “It is very important for us to bring a rider like Aron Canet into our project. He is a winning rider, who is fighting this season to become Moto3 World Champion. Aron has matured a lot in recent seasons and in 2019 he is proving that in terms of his riding he is a level above his rivals. As a Valencian team we are delighted to sign a local rider and it gives me even more pleasure that he came through one of the projects I started at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo – the Cuna de Campeones – as did the likes of Nico Terol, Sergio Gadea and Héctor Faubel, and others.”

Aron Canet: “I am excited about the step up to Moto2. After four seasons in Moto3 I am fighting for the title but I have decided to take the decision already to move up in category and to do it with the Ángel Nieto Team, because Jorge Martínez “Aspar” is an important figure in motorcycling and he and his team are offering me everything I want, which is a local team and a family environment. I am happy to be joining the Ángel Nieto Team, who have celebrated a lot of titles, won a lot of races and even more podiums. They have a lot of experience and will be able to give me the advice I need to help my career progress.”
