Navarro keeps Speed Up at the summit in FP2

Spaniard sets the only 2:04 lap to head Gardner and Fernandez on Friday in the Moto2™ class

Campetella Speed Up’s Jorge Navarro went one better than he did in FP1 to finish Friday at the GoPro British Grand Prix as the fastest Moto2™ rider. The Spaniard’s 2:04.993 saw him edge out second-place Remy Gardner (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team) by 0.129 as FlexBox HP 40’s Augusto Fernandez completed the top three.

FP1 saw Navarro and teammate Fabio Di Giannantonio sit pretty at the top of the times as Speed Up got off to a perfect start at Silverstone. But it was Navarro who came out all guns blazing in FP2 as he went 0.8 quicker than the fastest FP1 time with 33 minutes left on the clock. And Navarro would hold onto his advantage until the session closed, that time set in the early stages was enough to unveil the number 9 as the man to beat heading into Saturday.

Having finished FP1 in fifth, Gardner continued to look strong in FP2 and that proved to be the case come the end of the session. His 16th flying lap proved to be his best as the Australian propelled himself to P2 to sit as Navarro’s nearest threat, but there wasn’t such good news for Championship leader Alex Marquez (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) as the Spaniard slid out of contention at the tight Turn 14. No matter, Marquez would finish in a respectable sixth and ahead of him came Fernandez, his teammate Lorenzo Baldassarri and home favourite Sam Lowes (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2). All these riders – bar Lowes – were able to find time at the end of FP2 as each of them jumps up the timesheets from FP1.

After being unluckily taken out of a podium position at the Red Bull Ring, Austrian GP polesitter Tetsuta Nagashima (ONEXOX TKKR SAG Team) had another good day at the office to finish seventh fastest, an improvement from P12 in FP1, with second in the Championship Tom Lüthi (Dynavolt Intact GP) cementing a top 10 position in P8 having ended FP1 in third. Austrian GP winner Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Mattia Pasini (Tasca Racing Scuderia Moto2) completed the top 10.

The times in Moto2™ were blindingly fast as the intermediate class rip around the newly surfaced Silverstone, but will the top 14 change on Saturday morning? The automatic Q2 places are still up for grabs so don’t miss the action at 10:55 local time (GMT+1).
