Matteo Ferrari: the profile of a history maker

Delve into the Italian's career after he became the inaugural FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup winner

After an incredible first season in the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup, we have our inaugural Cup winner: Matteo Ferrari (Trentino Gresini MotoE). After taking P5 in Race 2 at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, the Italian lifted the crown with an 11-point advantage over Bradley Smith (One Energy Racing), bringing an impressive season to a close with X wins and X podiums.

From Cesena, Ferrari’s first key racing successes came in the RS125GP Trophy in the CIV – Campionato Italiano Velocita – as he won that in 2011, narrowly defeating Federico Caricasulo. From there he moved into the Moto3™ class in the CIV for 2012, winning the season opener and ending the season second overall. The MotoGP™ paddock therefore beckoned next, with Ferrari contesting the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Moto3™ seasons with San Carlo Team Italia and a points scorer each year.

2016 saw Ferrari move onto bigger machinery as he took on the Superbike class in the CIV, and he finished the season an impressive third overall, also having become a race winner in his first season. In 2017 he was again a podium finisher and ended the season in fourth, before 2018 saw a step forward as he made eight visits to the rostrum, two of which were wins, and was runner up to great friend Michele Pirro. Ferrari has also made appearances in the FIM STK1000 Cup on home turf at Imola and Misano, taking good hauls of points in every appearance – and even a win last season at Imola.

2019 saw Ferrari take on two new challenges – the FIM CEV Repsol Moto2™ European Championship, as a regular top ten contender – and the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup.

The Italian’s MotoE™ season began with some solid performances in testing that prefaced a top five finish first time out at the Sachsenring. Austria was another top five as what would become his trademark consistency started to become apparent, but Misano saw the Italian hit top gear. E-Pole saw him take his first front row start for a pivotal, double-header weekend, and the number 11 proved unbeatable once the lights went out. He won both races and took the points lead in the Cup into the season finale, arriving 19 ahead of then-closest challenger Hector Garzo (Tech 3 E-Racing).

The first race in Valencia saw Ferrari walk the line between risk and reward to perfection, crossing the line in fourth, but there was drama to come. Key rival Garzo was later disqualified, boosting Ferrari up to third and increasing his lead. The last race of the season saw the Italian line up with a 20-point advantage over Bradley Smith, and…

The 2019 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup winner is Matteo Ferrari – and he’ll race to defend the crown in 2020.
