World Cup winner Ferrari claims Virtual MotoE™ win

The Italian crashed on the final lap but was still able to cruise home over four seconds clear of anyone else

Trentino Gresini MotoE’s Matteo Ferrari has continued to make history in the class by becoming the first winner of a virtual race just months on from becoming the inaugural FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup Champion. The Italian eased home, despite a last lap crash, ahead of Avintia Esponsorama Racing’s Eric Granado and Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Mattia Casadei.

First lap carnage saw MotoE™ rookie, Join Contract Pons 40’s Jordi Torres, taken out at the opening corner, an incident that also involved Intact GP’s Dominique Aegerter and Tech 3 E-Racing’s Lukas Tulovic. The chaos allowed poleman Ferrari to escape at the front, with Granado in pursuit behind him.

The leading duo escaped at the front and wouldn’t be seen again in te five-lap dash. Meanwhile, Openbank Aspar Team’s Alejandro Medina shocked most by fighting through from dead last on the grid into third spot. The Spaniard was quickly put under pressure by Casadei but a crash for the Italian relieved that most of that pressure for the time being.

The laps ticked by with Ferrari still out front, despite Granado asking him to slow down to no avail, and, even though the World Cup winner crashed in the final sector on the final lap, he still cruised across the line four seconds ahead of the Brazilian. The final podium place in the end went to Casadei after he chased down and forced a mistake out of Medina on the final lap. Xavier Simeon (LCR E-Team) clinched fifth ahead of Torres and Mike Di Meglio (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) in sixth and seventh. The final finishers were Tulovic and Aegerter.
