Eyes to the skies: big-name riders praying rain stays away

MotoGP™ race winners and title contenders will be hoping dry conditions greet the MotoGP™ riders for FP3...

After the opening day of action at the myWorld Austrian Grand Prix, some big-name riders and Championship contenders are sitting outside of the top 10 – and they'll be worried heading into Saturday.

The Red Bull Ring’s surrounding Styrian mountains are notorious for throwing up some weather surprises, and if it’s raining on Saturday morning then we’re going to see riders competing in Q1 that we wouldn’t expect to be. Two of those riders form the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP team, with second in the Championship Maverick Viñales and nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi praying for a dry FP3.

Ducati are undefeated at the Red Bull Ring, but Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team) finds himself sandwiched between 11th place Viñales and 13th place Rossi on the Friday practice timesheets. LCR Honda Castrol’s Cal Crutchlow is also sitting outside the top 10, with Czech GP winner Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) having a quiet day in Austria to finish 16th.

Rain is set to threaten all weekend, but is it going to hold off for MotoGP™ FP3? Either way, we’re in for a treat on Saturday morning – if it’s dry, a mini qualifying session will take place as the riders fight for a top 10 position. If rain falls, we’ll see who holds the advantage in the wet conditions.

Don’t miss FP3 which gets underway at 09:55 local time (GMT+2).
