Acosta heads FP2 in Moto3™, McPhee remains top overall

The Championship leader took charge in the afternoon, but McPhee mastered Day 1

The Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland is heating up nicely at the Sachsenring, both in temperature and in on-track action, as the Moto3™ World Championship took to the circuit for their vital FP2 session. With the higher temperatures, times weren’t improving and thus the times from the morning session remained indicative of the order ahead of Saturday. Leading the way in the afternoon was Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) but it was John McPhee’s morning time that placed him on top on the combined times, ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) and Pedro Acosta.

THE TOP 10

Alongside new crew chief Daniel Bonmati, McPhee was able to shine in the morning and was well inside the top ten in the afternoon to complete a solid opening day in Germany, whilst it was Tatsuki Suzuki who was chasing the British rider, finishing second whilst also inside the top four in FP2. Acosta was able to improve his time in the afternoon to top the session and broke into the top three on combined times, whilst it was Gabriel Rodrigo (Indonesian Racing Gresini Moto3) was fourth overall but second in the hotter afternoon session, whilst Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) was fifth at the end of the day.

Stefano Nepa (BOE Owlride) was fifth overall and sixth in FP2, ahead of Romano Fenati (Sterilgarda Max Racing Team), Dennis Foggia (Leopard Racing), Filip Salac (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Darryn Binder (Petronas Sprinta Racing) completing the top ten – Foggia and Salac setting an identical lap time which stood from the morning session.

COMPLETING THE PROVISIONAL TOP 14

Despite a technical issue in the closing stages of FP2, Andrea Migno (Rivacold Snipers Team) was 11th at the end of the day ahead of fellow countryman Niccolo Antonelli (Avintia Esponsorama Moto3), although both were only 17th and 19th respectively in the hotter afternoon track action. Izan Guevara (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) was 13th ahead of Jaume Masia (Red Bull KTM Ajo), who made an impressive front-end save at Turn 13.

NOTEWORTHY MENTIONS

Sergio Garcia (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) had a tricky opening day, which left him down in 17th overall, having suffered a crash on the exit of Turn 3 – he was up and OK. Two places ahead of him on the combined times is Jeremy Alcoba (Indonesian Racing Gresini Moto3), who also failed to show strongly on the combined times.

Moto3™ FP3 kicks off at 09.00am local time (GMT+2) on Saturday morning!
