Who should we eye up if wet weather arrives in Austria?

There could be some shrewd picks for qualifying and race day if the heavens open again at the Red Bull Ring

For the second weekend in a row at the Red Bull Ring, the MotoGP™ riders were faced with some wet weather running in FP2. The heavens opened at the Bitci Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich and it gave us an indication as to who might go well if the rain falls again at some point during the weekend, something MotoGP™ Fantasy players should keep a keen eye on.

The unpredictable nature of the weather in Styria means the likelihood of rain falling again is possible, and just like last weekend, plenty of players might be looking at some good wet weather riders to bring in ahead of qualifying.

One on the watchlist after Friday’s running will be FP2 pacesetter Iker Lecuona (Tech3 KTM Factory Racing). At just $1.3m, the young Spaniard is a cheap option for players looking to have a nice punt, with Lecuona looking fast in the wet and mixed conditions.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team, $3.4m) was the rider to beat in the wet before Lecuona stuck some slick tyres in, and the eight-time World Champion is a rider you can never count out when the heavens open. His two-time World Champion brother Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol, $2m) is also another to keep a watchful eye on, the Spaniard ended FP2 in P6 and notched up a third top 10 of the season last time out.

Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team, $3m) is one of the more obvious wet weather picks. The Australian should also be on the radar in the dry too, so if you’re struggling for a selection, Miller is a good shout. Yes, he crashed out of P4 last weekend, but had more than enough pace for a podium.

A rider who will have pricked up some ears on Friday is new all-time lap record holder Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing, $3.7m). The Frenchman talked about taking inspiration from teammate Jorge Martin’s Styrian GP victory, and in both conditions, Zarco looks to be flying. P1 in FP1, P2 in FP2 – Zarco looks set to be up the sharp end whatever the weather brings. We know from last weekend and previous years how quick the Ducatis can be around the Red Bull Ring, Zarco proved that again today.

The final rider who gets a shoutout is Aprilia Racing Team Gresini’s Aleix Espargaro. The Spaniard has said how much he’s improved in the wet from last weekend to this, and it showed on the times. The elder Espargaro brother was P3 in FP2 and is another rider who is cheap to transfer in - $1.8m. The sole Aprilia rider this weekend was fifth in the dry too despite some technical issues in FP1, so the number 41 could be a shrewd selection this weekend.

As always, make sure you leave your transfers as late as possible – just before qualifying – to get all the information possible about which riders or manufacturers to pick at the second Red Bull Ring instalment. Some more rain is forecast to fall during the weekend, but as last Sunday showed, it might not come to fruition. Tune into FP3 at 09:55 local time (GMT+2) to see the MotoGP™ riders back on track!
