Raul Fernandez suffers small metacarpal fracture in training

The Moto2™ title contender picked up the injury while cycling and has since undergone successful surgery; Fernandez to ride in Aragon

Raul Fernandez and Red Bull KTM Ajo have confirmed the Spaniard has undergone successful surgery on a small fractured fifth right metacarpal suffered while cycling ahead of the Gran Premio TISSOT de Aragon.

The incident happened in the week after the British GP, with the Moto2™ rookie sensation being operated on by Dr. Xavier Mir and his team at the Unidad de la Extremidad Superior Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona on Sunday.

Fernandez has been doing recovery work since then and will be at the Aragon Grand Prix. Last year he claimed two poles in Alcañiz and his first podium in the World Championship at the Spanish circuit, while Fernandez currently sits second in the intermediate class title race – 44 adrift of teammate Remy Gardner.

Raul Fernandez: “I feel pretty good after the operation. We have already started our rehabilitation work and my hand is doing better than we expected. I am positive, although we have to improve little by little. I want to thank Dr. Xavier Mir's team from the Unidad de la Extremidad Superior Hospital Universitari Dexeus, since they treated me quickly, speeding up the process, and they were very professional.

“After what happened, I won't set any goals for this Grand Prix. I want to take things day by day, seeing how we feel, because my right hand is used for the gas and the brake. Aragon is a track that I really like, since I got my first World Championship podium there last year. We will do our best to be able to race on Sunday, if my hand allows it.”
