Red Bull Rookies Champion Alonso set for Portimao wildcard

There will be three Valresa GASGAS Aspar Team machines on show in Portugal as the young Colombian joins both Sergio Garcia and Izan Guevara

Last season's Red Bull Rookies MotoGP™ Cup Champion David Alonso will make only his second Grand Prix appearance this weekend at the Grande Prémio Tissot de Portugal, forming part of a three-man strong Valresa GasGas Aspar Team.

The talented 15-year-old, who turns 16 the day after Sunday's Portuguese Grand Prix, is back on the grid following his debut at the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. He'll line up alongside Aspar Moto3™ regulars Sergio Garcia and Izan Guevara.

The Colombian clinched six victories on his way to the Rookies Cup title in 2021, including a double win at the season-opening Portimao round, but didn't make the move through to the World Championship in 2022 due to his age.

Instead, he will contest the JuniorGP World Championship this year, with this weekend acting as the perfect warm-up to their opening round in Estoril in just over two weeks' time.

David Alonso: "I am excited to be able to compete again in the World Championship. The good thing is that it's not the first time, last year I already did it in Misano, so I know what a race weekend is like. Also, for me, it will be the first race of the year and it will serve as training for the FIM JuniorGP. My goal is to learn and enjoy the moment and the opportunity that the team gives me, to extract the maximum information and be able to apply it later in my championship."
