Öncü untouchable on Day 1 in Jerez

The Turk set a time no one could get close to as Masia and Holgado set their sights on home glory

Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) took hold of proceedings in Moto3™ at the Gran Premio MotoGP™ Guru by Gryfyn de España with an untouchable 1:46.173 0.408s clear of the rest of the field. Joining the Turkish rider in the top 3 on combined times was the Spaniard Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) with Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3) who rounded out the top 3.

The temperatures rose dramatically in the afternoon which made improvements very difficult in P2 with a faster circuit in P1. Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) drew first blood topping the P1 session. The Turk's 1:46.173 stood strong in P2 with the track conditions seeing no improvements from the early morning efforts.

Midway through P2 two fast crashes from Tatsuki Suzki (Leopard Racing) and Kaito Toba (SIC58 Squadra Corse) covered the tarmac at turn 11 in gravel, which brought out the red flags for the officials to clear the gravel from the circuit. The green flag was waving again soon after and the riders swarmed to the circuit for their final 20 minutes of Friday track action.

Ayumu Sasaki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) just missed out on the top 3 and was one of few riders who managed to go faster in the 2nd session, as he took 4th spot on Friday. It was a good start to the weekend for Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) who finishes the first day of his first home Grand Prix just inside the top 5.

Moto3™ action continues on Saturday, make sure not to miss any of the action with Practice 3 at 08:40 and qualifying at 12:50 local time (GMT +1).
