Certified sustainability for the Portuguese GP

The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve en route towards ISO 20121 certification

With global recognition also with regard to good practices of environmental sustainability, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve will continue to promote these same actions and measures in order to achieve a higher level of sustainability in more areas of intervention during the MotoGP™ world race to be held between 22 and 24 March. This will be another step on the way to becoming certified according to the ISO 20121 standard.

"Autodromo Internacional do Algarve has been following sustainability practices that are already recognized and known in recent years. We are totally independent in terms of electricity, which is obtained entirely from renewable sources and, in addition, as a result of our partnership with Repsol, we already use fuel with a high percentage of synthetic compound. We also have a program for the use of wastewater and rainwater and collection of oils implemented and now, with this collaboration with a certified company with proven experience in the market, we will be able to have the evidence of the results of all this effort. We want not only to be the best and most sustainable GP of the championship, but also to continue and further increase our practices in this area", mentions Paulo Pinheiro, Parkalgar CEO.

To achieve the parameters of excellence, the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve will put into practice during the Portuguese GP in March, a series of 12 environmental measures - which will be audited - both inside and outside the circuit, of which stand out:

  • Use of additional solar panels to power the Media Centre
  • Compulsory use of electric scooters in Paddock
  • Use of synthetic fuel in support vehicles
  • Donation of unused food products
  • Control and reduction of water consumption in the Paddock
  • Recycling of used tyres

In order to implement all the necessary measures to obtain ISO 20121 certification, a partnership has been established with SIA - Sociedade Inovação Ambiental, one of the few organizations certified to do so in our country and that was also responsible for the certification process of Rock in Rio in Lisbon and also in Rio de Janeiro, having also collaborated in the identical process of the Formula E DS Techeetah team.
