第１６戦日本ＧＰのフリー走行１は１８日、ツインリンクもてぎで行われ、総合４位のマーベリック・ビニャーレスが今季１４度目のトップタイムをマーク。３位表彰台を獲得した前戦タイＧＰに続き、２戦連続して１番手発進を決めた。

気温１８度、路面温度２２度のドライコンディションの中、総合７位のファビオ・クアルタラロは、０.２５８秒差の２番手。総合１０位のフランコ・モルビデッリは、０.４１１秒差の３番手に入り、ヤマハ勢がトップ３に進出。

１９年王者のマルク・マルケスは、０.４６３秒差の４番手。総合３位のアレックス・リンスは５番手。総合１３位のジョアン・ミル、総合８位のジャック・ミラー、総合２位のアンドレア・ドビツィオーソ、総合１１位のポル・エスパルガロ、総合９位のカル・クラッチローがトップ１０入り。

総合６位のバレンティーノ・ロッシは、０.８４８秒差の１２番手。総合５位のダニロ・ペトルッチは１３番手。総合１２位の中上貴晶は、１.１９１秒差の１５番手だった。
