Five-star Fernandez clinches back-to-back MotorLand poles

Red Bull KTM Ajo's Raul Fernandez was once again unstoppable over one lap around MotorLand Aragon as he stormed to his second Moto3™ pole position in seven days, this time at the Liqui Moly Teruel Grand Prix. The Spaniard's final flying lap was only a tenth adrift of the fastest-ever lightweight class lap around the Alcañiz circuit with the returning Tony Arbolino (Rivacold Snipers Team) a quarter of a second back in second and Celestino Vietti (SKY Racing Team VR46) 0.345 seconds adrift in third.

After the first flying laps, Fernandez was already half a second off of Jorge Martin's Aragon lap record and jumped to the top of the timesheets immediately. Seven minutes remaining and Kömmerling Gresini Moto3's Gabriel Rodrigo was the man to get closest, as the Argentine got to within 0.025 seconds of Fernandez to sit provisionally second.

Vietti then split the leading duo to move to second on the timesheets before the grid took one last shuffle as the final flying laps came in. Fernandez went even quicker with 20 seconds left, his 1:57.199 the fastest lap we've seen around MotorLand Aragon in 2020 and securing his fifth pole position of the season. Arbolino clinched second on the grid with the chequered flag out, a third front row in four races, bumping his compatriot Vietti to the outside of the front row for Sunday's Teruel Grand Prix, one place worse off than he was for the Aragon Grand Prix.

Rodrigo was subsequently dropped to the second row of the grid and will start fourth, with World Championship leader Albert Arenas (Solunion Aspar Team Moto3) shrugging off early frustration with teammate Stefano Nepa to end up fifth. They will be joined on row two by Ayumu Sasaki, the best Saturday result for the Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider since he took fourth in last year's British Grand Prix.

Aragon Grand Prix winner Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) will start from seventh on the grid instead of last week's 17th. The Spaniard will have a pair of Japanese riders alongside him on row three of the grid with Kaito Toba (Red Bull KTM Ajo) ending up eighth and Tatsuki Suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) ending up ninth. Making it four Japanese riders inside the top ten is Honda Team Asia's Ai Ogura, who will front the fourth row of the grid.
