Miquel Pons set to replace Corsi and Marcon at Portimao

The Spaniard will step in for the injured Corsi and his replacement, Marcon, at MV Agusta after the Italian tested positive for Covid-19

Spain's Miquel Pons is set to make his Moto2™ World Championship debut this weekend at the 888 Portuguese Grand Prix, replacing both Simone Corsi and Tommaso Marcon. Corsi injured his left wrist during the opening round of 2021, with Marcon replacing him at Doha Grand Prix. Unfortunately, Marcon has tested positive for Covid-19 upon his return to Italy and is, therefore, ruled out of this weekend's action.

Pons, from Palma de Mallorca, will step in for his first World Championship appearance. Having started his career on two wheels at the age of 6 in the Balearic motocross championship, the 23-year-old went to be a four-time runner-up in Supersport in ESBK, where he competed from 2016 to 2019. He has also competed in the European Moto2™ Championship and WorldSSP, plus will ride for the LCR E-Team in MotoE™ in 2021.

Miquel Pons: "I am very happy for the opportunity I have been given. The truth is that for me it is a dream to be able to race in the Moto2 championship for this race. I will put all my effort in it and give my best. I would like to thank the MV Agusta Forward Racing team and Giovanni Cuzari, as well as the Hernandez family, Lucio Cecchinello, my family and all those who support me and have made this experience possible."

Giovanni Cuzari, Team Owner: "I'm happy to give this opportunity to the young Spaniard Miquel Pons and I would like to thank Lucio Cecchinello, who was very willing to let us have his rider for this race, as well as pointing him out to us as a rider who has already raced on the Portuguese track. We hope Miquel can express himself at his best on the MV Agusta F2, even though it is his first time on a 3-cylinder Moto2. Obviously, I am sorry for Tommaso but certainly relieved knowing that he is well and has not developed any symptoms related to COVID-19. So, I give my personal best of luck to Miquel, who we will meet in a few days on the track."
