Alonso lands pole position as Rueda improves late on Saturday

It was an intense Saturday for the Moto3™ field at the Gran Premio GoPro de Aragon, with David Alonso (CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team) continuing to impress, topping Practice 2 before storming to a phenomenal pole position. The Colombian set a 1:58.059 to secure an incredible 0.433 advantage over Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo), who claimed second on the grid after a strong Saturday. Meanwhile, P3 went the way of BOE Motorsports’ David Muñoz – unable to break into the 1:58 bracket.

No changes in Practice 2 before a dramatic qualifying

It was wet conditions for Practice 2, meaning it was a slow start to the day and there were no changes inside the top 14 – forcing some big names to battle in Q1. Some of those names included the experienced Ryusei Yamanaka (MT Helmets – MSI), who suffered from mechanical issues in Q1 – bringing an end to his day. As the chequered flag flew in a dry Q1, Matteo Bertelle (Kopron Rivacold Snipers Team), Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia), Filippo Farioli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) and Fibre Tec Honda - MLav Racing’s Scott Ogden all earned a spot in Q2, with just nine riders setting a time.

As Q2 got underway on Saturday afternoon Jacob Roulstone (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) suffered a highside before the #12 was able to set a lap. Fast laps were soon set and Alonso went quickest before improving further on his final run - charging to pole.

Piqueras starts from the second row on Sunday

Heading the second row of the grid after qualifying finished was Angel Piqueras (Leopard Racing), who lost time in the final sector – securing P4. Meanwhile, Joel Kelso (BOE Motorsports) will join the #36 on the second row, starting in fifth ahead of SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Luca Lunetta. The Italian had an impressive session, finishing 1.249s adrift from the top spot.

Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) is back on the third row, finishing the day in seventh. The Spaniard has steep competition with Matteo Bertelle (Kopron Rivacold Snipers Team) and Collin Veijer (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) in ninth. The Dutchman will have some pace to find to match Alonso and will start ahead of Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets-MSI), who was 10^th at the end of proceedings as Moto3™ continues to remain as unpredictable as ever.
