Binder sets early pace in Austria

Championship leader quickest out the blocks at the Red Bull Ring

In cool conditions in the mountains near Spielberg, the Moto3™ grid headed out on track for their first session of the weekend on the new Red Bull Ring as the paddock returns to the venue for the first time in 19 years. It was points leader Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) who set the early pace in the session, and the South African kept his place at the top of the timesheets until the end of FP1 to go fastest on a 1:37.902 – ahead of Leopard Racing pair Joan Mir in P2 and Fabio Quartararo in P3.

Binder, who has a 47 point lead in the championship as the second half of the season gets underway, was the first rider down in the 1 minute 38s and then again the first to drop into the 1:37s with only a few minutes of the session remaining. Andrea Migno (Sky Racing Team VR46) and rookie Bo Bendsneyder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) completed the top 5, with Binder’s key championship rivals Romano Fenati (Sky Racing Team VR46) and Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) in P7 and P19 respectively.
