We’ve got a fifth rookie joining the grid in 2027, and it’s none other than Senna Agius! Australia’s new face of MotoGP is gearing up for an exciting step as he heads to Red Bull KTM Tech3 for his debut. It comes at the perfect time too, with Agius joining the premier class in time to race at the brand-new Adelaide Street Circuit in MotoGP’s fresh 850cc era.
That’s not the only reason to be excited either, with Agius joining a very prestigious list of Australian greats, following in the footsteps of Jack Miller, Casey Stoner, Mick Doohan, Wayne Gardner and more.
THE MOVE TO EUROPE
Following a successful junior career on both dirt and tarmac, Agius’ talents were realised first in what’s now known as the Idemitsu Moto4 Asia Cup, receiving the call-up after a promising selection event. The Australian grabbed multiple top-10 finishes, later inspiring a move to the European paddock for 2020. He spent two years in the Moto3 Junior World Championship, scoring points on multiple occasions and gaining the valuable experience needed before real success was found as he made the step onto Moto2 machinery.
More power suited Agius. And after joining the Moto2 European Championship for 2022, the rookie was instantly on the money – clinching two podiums at the season opener in Portugal. That was all before a dominant double showing in Barcelona and further podium success – impressive stuff, right? He ended the season as runner-up, but things were about to get even better the following year.
Five wins from the opening six races – how do you like that! Agius was on fire at the start of 2023, immediately becoming the rider to beat. Despite a Friday highside placing the Australian out of contention for Barcelona, Senna was already planning his attack for the final round. Moto2: WORLD CLASS RESULTS
The fairytale continued for Agius and Intact GP as their partnership and success carried into the Moto2 World Championship for 2024. It was a solid rookie season, which would be completely overshadowed by the Australian GP, where the #81 stood on the podium for the first time – becoming a real home hero. P18 in the standings, but the foundations were already there as they looked to build momentum into the following year.
2025 started in style, clinching podiums in both Thailand and Spain, before the Australian wrote the headlines with a breakthrough win at the British GP. It was a huge feat, and it was clear that Senna had the taste for winning one more… His next victory arrived at his home round, allowing the Australian national anthem to ring out at Phillip Island. P10 in the standings was a huge improvement, with all signs pointing towards a BIG 2026 campaign!
Winner in the USA, victory in Spain and podium finishes in Hungary and the Netherlands – the title challenge had begun. The #81 was third in the Championship at the halfway point, giving plenty of hope and optimism for the remainder of the season. Although the Championship isn’t decided yet, Guenther Steiner had seen enough – handing Senna Agius a contract for 2027.
MotoGP: NEW SETTING, NEW EXPECTATIONS
Here we are then, MotoGP! It doesn’t get better than this; every late night, every training session, every crash and every win has led up to this moment. Of course, with a first name like Senna, he was always going to be fast, but now the Australian star can begin to set his sights on the premier class. He won’t be the only rookie on the grid either, with David Alonso, Daniel Holgado, Izan Guevara and Nicolo Bulega for company in the rookie of the year battle.
It’ll be a whole new line-up for Tech3 too, with Steiner’s dream of having experience and fresh blood coming true. The #81 will partner alongside MotoGP veteran Luca Marini for the upcoming season as Enea Bastianini and Maverick Viñales move on. Marini, the perfect development rider, heads alongside Agius for a fresh perspective as we get ready for new regulations in 2027.
